Museum of Natural History

We went to the museum of natural history on Wednesday. I am realizing that we won't be here that much longer and I need to take advantage of all the cool things in the area. We loved the butterfly house, dinosaurs and diamonds.

Secure in his masculinity

Yesterday we had another snow day (yeah!) Sarah was up at the crack of dawn yelling at everyone to get up because it had SNOWED! We were outside by 7:30 and played for a good hour. Later that day we wanted to go to the big hills (in Hershey). Earlier in the morning I noticed that David's coat wasn't really covering his gloves and his wrists were really cold. Becca was wearing another coat so I put Becca's PINK barbie coat on David. It was definitely warmer and he thought he was really cool wearing Becca's coat, but I do have to admit it was a little weird. When we were walking up the hill together a group of teenagers said, "oh what a cute little girl" haha. I didn't correct them. And when I was calling him David I kept getting glances. Why is it okay for a girl to wear blue (we all had on blue coats except David) but boys can't wear pink...

Becca's coat was blue, but it was really furry (kind of like cookie monster...thanks Melissa) anyways, she things that it is from a blue bear. Sarah quickly corrected her and said that there is no such thing as a blue bear and she said then where did the fur on my coat come from...haha.

Don't forget to answer my poll question on the side bar.

Paint, paint and more paint

Even though I have been painting forever I don't know it I am even half way there...but I am getting there.

I really have to count my blessings because tomorrow I am watching my friends kids while she packs up their things and takes them (she is getting a divorce and the husband thinks he is keeping the kids).

I am bringing dinner to a sister from church who was evicted and had really no place to go so the bishop put her up in a hotel until she can get her mortgage papers together to move...hopefully that will go through.

If all I have to deal with is paint, I will take it!

Snow pictures

For some odd reason I wasn't allowed to post pictures on the last post so here are a few.

HAHA I love this picture and it reminded me of yesterday after the snow fun the kids wanted a bath/shower...all together. I had a ton I needed to get done so I said sure (I was trying to bake for our anual fundraiser...) They were in the tub for a good 30-45 minutes and I heard so really loud splashing so I went up there. The water was about an inch from the top and the floor had a good amount sloshing around. Becca was "diving" into the tub to go scuba diving. Oh man. Well at least they had fun and I got some things done (although they were both complaining that their bum hurt today...whoops!)

HAHA I just noticed that David has his tongue sticking out in both shots. Too cute. Oh and his favorite part of the snow is eating it :)

Let it SNOW!

Yeah the day that Sarah has been waiting for finally arrived! She has been waiting for the snow since the last time it snowed in December! We have had a lot of rain and ice, but very little snow. She couldn't wait to go sledding, so here we are in the middle of the snow (it did snow about 4 more inches and we went out the next day and because it was a little icy we slid farther and had a lot more fun! The first day David was very timid, but the second day his favorite place was on Sarah's back as they were both going down head first...am I crazy for letting my 2 year old go down head first on his sisters back!!! This video is from the first day, but gives you a little taste as to how excited Sarah was!

Life is not fair

Sunday after church we were driving home and Becca pops in her lollipop that she got from her teacher and David howled until I gave him his lollipop from a little girl in his class and Sarah cried all the way home because she didn't get anything at church...hence my statement, "well honey life is not fair." I began to tell her that on Thursday she would have about 18 Valentines and some were bound to be filled with candy. This still didn't faze her and she continued to cry until we were home (fortunatly we live about 8 minutes from church).

Later on that evening we were talking about a family motto...I gave the suggestions *we can do hard things * stand a little taller * do your best and Aaron suggested *we love each other. Sarah promptly said I think it should be life is not fair. haha. I told her although that statement was true, it didn't quite qualify for our family motto. haha. boy soon it is going to be a lot more than candy :)

Interesting story behind hymn sung at President Hinckley's funeral

Subject: story behind hymn sung at pres. hinckley's funeral

During President Hinckley's funeral the Tabernacle Choir sang a hymn text written by President Hinckley which I set to music in December. I would like to share the story of it with you:

About two months before my niece Kathy Blacker died, on January 11, 2008, she found a three-verse poem by President Hinckley among her files. Although she was resigned to dying, she had some fears about the dying process and his words greatly comforted her-especially the second verse which described exactly what she was feeling. She wrote to Pres. Hinckley's office to ask permission to have the poem printed on her funeral program, and she received a very nice letter from his secretary Don H. Staheli saying that President Hinckley gave his permission for her to do so. The letter also conveyed some very comforting words from Pres. Hinckley which were helpful to Kathy in her final weeks, and he said he would remember Kathy in his prayers. Then Kathy suggested that I write and ask permission to give the poem a hymn setting. I did so, and Brother Staheli conveyed President Hinckley's permission for me to write the hymn. After offering some heartfelt prayers that I might be able to write appropriate music for his profoundly beautiful and moving text, I wrote the hymn setting and sent a copy to President Hinckley's office for approval at the end of December. I received an immediate response.Kathy passed away January 11 and after her funeral I sent a copy of her funeral program to President Hinckley's office so he could see how nicely his poem was displayed along side my brother Gary Kapp's painting of Christ.

When I heard President Hinckley had passed away last Sunday night I was feeling a little sad to think I hadn't received a letter with his official approval. But the very next day, after his passing, the hoped-for letter arrived with his approval, his permission for me to publish it in a future volume of my series Inspirational New Hymns for Choir and Home, and leaving it to my discretion as to whether to submit it to the Church Music Division. The timing was so unusual and I was extremely grateful to receive the letter as a tender mercy in my life. Then on Monday afternoon Craig Jessop, Tabernacle Choir Director, heard about the hymn and had his office call me to obtain a copy of the hymn for consideration for President Hinckley's funeral. On Tuesday, while travelling in California, I learned that the hymn would be performed by The Tabernacle Choir at President Hinckley's funeral on Saturday.Having seen the great comfort this hymn brought to my niece who died just two weeks before President Hinckley passed away, my great desire is for people throughout the world to have a free copy of these magnificent words of President Hinckley to comfort them in times of the loss of loved ones. This is just one more way his influence could be felt down through time.

If you want a copy of the music just let me know and I will e-mail it to you.

More daily conversations

Becca: Mom does Sister so and so have a baby in her tummy?
Me: no
Becca: Then why is it so big

(at least she said this in the privacy of our own car!)

Playing the piano
Becca: Mom, listen to my song. It's classical music.

Listening to the radio in the car
Becca: Oh yeah I like this rock star music (it was the song Gloria...not quite rock star material)

So we just gave our piano away...sad, but I know there will be a better one for me in Utah. It is kind of sad getting rid of all our things. I am giving our glider away. I don't really like it THAT much, but it was Aaron's present for me when I came home from the hospital with Sarah...ah...

We will be PAINTING like CRAZY these next few days, so if I drop off the face of the blog world you will know why. We went with Antique White and after doing the front bathroom I was really nervous because I thought it looked yellow, but now that we have the first few rooms done I think it will be great. It is not that noticable but it really warms the room up. Bad thing about painting is you can really only do it when the kids are sleeping. So late nights!

Daily Conversation

This morning after I was done brushing Becca's hair she looks up at me and says

you have a boogie in your nose.
Me: flaring my nostril a bit, um I don't see one
Becca: you have really big holes. I have small holes.
Me: uh
Becca: It kind of looks like a pig nose.

HAHA

Becca standing on top of her bed.

Becca: watch out David I'm going to blow.

They have been watching a construction video where they blow up the mountain...I guess that is where she got it...

spell check

my spell check hasn't been working...any suggestions on fixing it?

SURPRISE

Today when I went to playgroup some of my friends had planned a surprise party for ME! I couldn't believe it! My brithday was over a month ago and the girl that did it was one of the few who actually gave me a present. She gave me two beautiful outfits, a huge yummy cake and dinner for tonight! Man did I feel really spoiled!

Emotional week

This week has been very emotional for me! Yesterday was President Hinckley's funeral and it was very touching. We didn't stay for the gravesite ceremony so I am going to check if it is on line. You could see the change in President Monson. I bet it is hard on him because President Hinckley has been with him for over the last 50 years!

After the funeral I finished reading The Fire and the Covenant. It is really one of the best books I have read! There were so many touching stories in there, but one that really moved me was a story of a husband and wife. It was freezing (with the wind chill about 50 below 0!) and they hadn't eaten well for about a week (1/4 cup flour a day and snow for water). The husband was about 6'5 and the wife was about 5'. It tells how his feet were so badly frostbitten that he just couldn't go on. Their 5 year old son just died and he told his wife that he was going to lie down and die. She told him, get in the cart and I will pull (something that she couldn't have done without the Lord's help). Later in the Salt Lake Valley he was bishop! What a remarkable story! I had always heard about the Willie Martin handcart company (and Aaron's Aunt is married to a Willie) but have never really heard the stories. It is a fat book (due to the actual diary excerpts at the end of each chapter) but it is well worth it!

Thank You Mr. President

Yesterday I filed my taxes and was greatful to President Bush and the $1000 tax credit per child. Thanks to President Bush we will have new carpet for our house! We are just doing our part to keep the economy alive :)

I really didn't think that itemizing would help us, but we got about $800 more than if we would have just taken the standard deductions. Nice.

Two words - Refrigerator Lock

Yesterday I came down from my shower and found that the eggs all had a nice little poke in the top of them! Then I saw that the cheese slices were all unwrapped and there were numerous apples with bites taken out of them.

At first it was cute that David was independent, but enough is enough!

Poor David this morning he went and found that he was LOCKED OUT!
