I've bought almost all of my stuff at estate sales and several items at a garage sale. I did buy new couches for the family room, a kitchen table (that is now in the study), bunkbeds at Costco and mattresses. Everything else I've just been really lucky to find used! But, I'd look on ksl.com, craigslist and the paper to see if you can find estate sales in nicer areas. Down East Home can have some decent stuff, too, esp. if it goes on sale. Oh, and I love the Finer Consigner (it's in SL). We bought a TV armoire there brand new, but 1/2 off the original sales price.
Buy new. After having yard sale and mismatched furniture for so long, I am SO ready for an actual new set anyway. I imagine you're in the same situation, but maybe I'm wrong.
Always sit on everything before you buy it. I wouldn't EVER buy online. Everything looks different and feels different in person. As for fabric, microfiber or leather holds up the best to kids. I suggest microfiber.
It seems like Ashley Furniture often has good sales/prices and comfortable stuff. That's probably where we'll end up getting our furniture once our tax money gets here.
I definitely don't recommend leaving everything. I think that it would be overwhelming to think about starting from scratch. We just got rid of everything junky when we moved, and it was still overwhelming to try to fill a much bigger house than we have ever had. It will take us years. If you have all of your old stuff, you can take your time and look for sales and not feel rushed to jump into anything. There is a good chance that you will have a basement in Utah, and your old stuff would go great there if nowhere else.
We have had pretty good luck at the RC Willey Clearance center as far as purchases. Other than that, we just went to Orem by the mall, and went to a bunch of furniture stores that were all clustered together.
We only took our stuff that was really nice, which was not much. We found that it was a whole lot more fun to buy new. We ended up buying all of our furniture from RC Willey and having it shipped out to Virginia. They had the best deals and highest quality. I will keep you in my prayers with the whole house saga. It really is one of the most stressful things ever.
Well I dont really know of any places that are in the American Fork area but I say BUY NEW! You guys have both done a lot of sacrificing for the last 4+4+4=12 years and it's time to enjoy. Even if you have to sit on camping chairs for the first few weeks! It's also nice to have a fresh start and coordinate room to room. I love Ashley Furniture too. Most of my furniture is from there. Furniture is a great investment. You really have it for a long time and spend a lot of time using it! Hey you can always fly me out for a visit and I can help you decorate your new place...
um could you please stop talking about moving already? It makes me a little depressed. Seriously though, how fun to buy new stuff.I would say keep at least a few basics, mattresses, kitchen table etc. I know my SIL has bought some furniture some place in Orem where the furniture is wood and good quality but not finished so you buy it cheaper and then stain it yourself. I can ask her if you really want to know.

i think is the best...if we wouldn't bought the beds this year...i would do the same. There's always spring and summersales.
Did you have a lot of time this day to post. :) A friend of mine goes to overstock.com and waits for free shipping. I don't know how pricey it is.
Here is my advice:

For decent prices on really nice, unique items, Gardner Village carries a variety of furniture lines.
I'm getting excited for you and really want to visit you when you get there!
