good books

I am looking to compile a list of good books that I can recommend for my church book club. If you have any suggestions of different genres I would love it! Thus far we have done:

The Hiding Place
The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax
The Bronze Bow
The Peacegiver
Harry Potter (by far the most popular)
Jane Eyre

I have read some for other book clubs and they seem either too superficial or too smutty.

Our ward is starting a book club enrichment now too and I will miss the first one because of a school open house-but I will fill you in on what we're reading.

Orson Scott Card has some great books. His Women of Genesis books (Sarah and Rebekah) are good. Saints might be an interesting one to provoke conversation. It is about a lot more than polygamy, but the book does take polygamy head on without skimming over it. He tries to (in my opinion without judgment) show how it affected people differently. How some people really had a hard time with it and some people were able to embrace it. And then you also have his SF stuff. Ender's Game and the subsequent Shadow series.

Hmmm...but those may be hard to come by without buying them on the internet...

I'll try and keep thinking about it. I need to start finding new books again too.

I liked his women of genisis but didn't like how he portrayed the prophets (Abraham, Issac...I haven't read the last one yet) I didn't really like Saints. I read it a few years ago but wasn't too impressed. I also liked the Enders series. thanks for the suggestions!

The best book I have read lately is Carry On Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. Not too long, very thought provoking. the mom

Interesting. I don't remember how he portrayed the Prophets really. It's been awhile since I read them. I don't remember being put off though. I like historical fiction not because I think it went down like that, but because it makes me think about them as people when I'm reading the scriptures. People with fears, strengths, weaknesses, etc. I think I read Saints when I lived with you, so it's totally been awhile on that one.
