My first grade experience

Here I am in first grade. I was in Mrs. McGrath's class. I think almost all of my brothers and sisters were in her class. We lived 2 houses down from Mrs. McGrath and I loved her as a teacher. I have a horrible memory, but what I do remember from 1st grade is my reading caterpillar. On the head of the caterpillar it had my name and then there were circles that we could attach to the head for every book we read. I wanted to have the longest caterpillar, and I think by the end of 1st grade mine went all the way around the classroom. I also had my first solo in the Halloween program. I had to wear a shawl (one that old ladies wore) and dress like a witch. Mr. Boone was our student teacher (and was later my 3rd grade teacher).

oooh. I loved Mrs. McGrath. She always had a bowl of candy at her house when we went and visited.

I also have a horrible memory, but a few things I remember from that year are:

We made an easter basket by covering a balloon with paper mache (to hold the shape) and tissue paper (to make it pretty). Once it was dry we popped the balloon and cut out the front part for an opening.

At the Christmas play our class (maybe even the whole first grade) recited "Twas the night before Christmas" from memory. I remember doing it in a really weird voice.

I too remember the bookworm and being soooo excited and dedicated to making it long. After the school year was over I took it home and hung it around our room.

yes, i loved that bookworm too. chris jones was the only one whose bookworm was longer than mine.

other memories (besides the great paper mache easter baskets):

using rhythm band instruments while marching around the classroom

go you chicken fat go

homemade suckers if you you got five stars on your handwriting chart

learning to lead music to "on top of spaghetti"

singing "cartloads of pumpkins" at thanksgiving

what a great teacher she was!!!

Cel what is your "horrible memory?"

manda wasn't that the "melk" year?

love the memories!

hahahahaha. no, no. I meant that I don't remember things well. I don't have a memory of anything that went terribly wrong that year. I do remember having a huge crush on a kid named Stephen Reidhead and I chased him all over the playground, pinned him down, and kissed him. I never had that "shy" problem...

I can't believe how dark your hair is! But you still have that smile that says "HI I'm Julie and I'm fun"

I think part of the darkness of the hair was the lighting. You always had lighter hair and of course the white streak through it. No sign of the streak in this picture.

It was fun to hear all of your memories. The learning to lead music reminds me that I think she used to say "pretend you are chopping off the head of a chicken and then scraping it off the block."

So 3/4 would be Chop Scrape Up. Am I right? the mom

Hmmm. Interesting. I remember learning to lead and saying "chop, scrape, scrape, up", but I didn't remember that it was a chicken's head we were pretending to chop! Maybe that's why I was a vegetarian for so long!
